Watford seeks a rebound from their recent loss as they prepare to host an in-form Norwich City at Vicarage Road in the Championship on Tuesday. The Hornets fell victim to Leicester City in their last match, while Norwich secured a narrow win against Queens Park Rangers at Carrow Road.
Before the international break in November, Watford had an impressive six-game unbeaten streak. However, their trip to the East Midlands resulted in a defeat as Jamie Vardy scored twice for Leicester City.
Despite Watford's strong start to the season, Enzo Maresca's team appears poised for a return to the Premier League. Valerien Ismael's approach during the match against Leicester suggested a strategy aimed at securing a draw, drawing mixed reactions from fans. However, with key players like Ismailia Sarr and Joao Pedro no longer with the team, the reality for Vicarage Road is that they might not be a major contender for promotion in the Championship.
Currently placed 15th in the Championship standings, Watford has amassed 21 points from 17 matches, securing victories only five times so far. In the absence of Sarr and Pedro, the team has relied on experienced Championship players like Jake Livermore and Tom Ince, who joined from West Bromwich Albion and Reading respectively, to drive their push towards the top six.
Norwich secured consecutive victories in the Championship, a first since August, by narrowly defeating QPR, a team fighting relegation, in East Anglia. Despite the win, the performance left much to be desired, and the three points added pressure on manager David Wagner.
Carrow Road fans have grown accustomed to players like Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell dominating lower-ranked teams in recent seasons. However, the current scenario differs significantly, forcing Norwich to work hard for their win against Marti Cifuentes's side after Ui-Jo Hwang's first-half goal.
With the season heading into a busy festive period, Wagner's team sits 13th in the Championship. Preston North End, in sixth place, holds a five-point lead, while Rotherham United, in 22nd place, trails by 11 points. As Christmas approaches, Norwich aims to climb higher in the standings.
In a challenging season, one bright spot for Norwich has been the impressive performances of midfielder Gabriel Sara, showcasing Brazilian flair. The 24-year-old has contributed six assists in the Championship, trailing only Leif Davis of Ipswich Town in setting up goals for teammates.
Norwich's away form has been average, earning eight points from as many games. However, their second away win of the season came recently in South Wales, with Ireland's Adam Idah scoring a late winner against Cardiff City.
