When Real Madrid play at the Mestalla on Friday night against a Valencia side struggling in 19 th place, they will be hoping to go to the top of La Liga table.
Real Madrid are second on 50 points, only a point behind leaders Atletico Madrid and two points ahead of Barcelona placed third, while Valencia are on 23 points after a disastrous first half of the season with Real Valladolid 20th on the table.
With 17 games played in the current league season, Valencia have managed only two victories, six drawn and nine losses putting the team at 19th position on the log with 12 points plus, same as 20th placed Real Valladolid.
Los Che are only four points away from 17 th placed Getafe with one game in hand, so it should not be time to panic yet, and Valencia have won four points in their two home games against Real Madrid in the league last season, finishing 2-2.
Ruben Baraja’s side have most recently drawn to Espanyol and Alaves in the Spanish La Liga match and they have not recorded a victory in the Spanish top tier since a home win against Real Betis on November 23rd.
The six time Spanish champions have only garnered two points from the last five La Liga games, and two wins in 14 have Spanish top flight games this season have raised more questions at this juncture of the season.
Valencia have managed to get only nine points from the eight La Liga games in their own backyard this season, however, Real Madrid, who have struggled in their journeys outside Bernabeu, annexed just four wins from the nine league games on their travels in the 2024-25 season.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, came into the Spanish winter break fresh off a 4-2 victory over Sevilla, putting them in second place with 40 points from 18 league games.
Third-place Barcelona, who have played one more game than the two teams at the top of the division, is two points ahead of Carlo Ancelotti's team, which is one point behind the leaders Atletico, who have also played eighteen games.
The defending champions will undoubtedly be vying for all three, with a 13th La Liga victory of the season on their minds, even if Real Madrid just needs one point to take the lead on Friday.
Following their victory over Pachuca last month, Los Blancos will play in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. They will play Deportiva Minera in the former on January 6 and Mallorca in the latter competition's semi-finals three days later.
Since Los Blancos have so much talent, it would be fair to say that Real Madrid has struggled to play their best football in the first half of this season. However, their ability to move to the top of the table on Friday is concerning for their rivals, and if they suddenly start to find a rhythm, it will be bad news for the others.
As for Los Blancos, Vinicius Junior will return to the team after missing the game with Sevilla through suspension, meaning that the club's sole absentees for this contest are David Alaba, Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal.
Alaba has made tremendous progress in his comeback from a major knee injury, which has kept him out for more than a year, but this encounter will come too soon for the Austria international.
Dani Ceballos and Brahim Diaz may be replaced by Fran Garcia and Vinicius in the two changes head coach Ancelotti may make to the team that started against Sevilla last time out.
Pepelu, a midfielder who came off the bench in the 2-2 draw with Alaves before to the Spanish winter break, will also be absent for Los Che after receiving a milestone yellow card.
Real Madrid is reportedly interested in Yarek Gasiorowski, and the Spanish center back should start in the midst of the defense once more.
