With their dreams of remaining in the Bundesliga pinned on their finishing in the relegation playoff spot, Heidenheim are on the road to Union Berlin at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei on Saturday.

Die Eisernen will aiming at maintaining their unbeaten streak in eight games this weekend while demotion threatened visitors will be targeting the second win in three games.

Steffen Baumgart’s Union can rest easy that they are safe from the drop with two fixtures remaining following an impressive run of form of three wins, five draws and zero defeats since mid-March but will be desperate to finish their campaign unbeaten.

Last Saturday Die Eisernen came back from two behind to scrape a 2-2 draw with European hopefuls Werder Bremen, and although it lifted them to four games without a win, the boss will be well pleased with how his side fought for the point.

That hard-fought stalemate puts Baumgart's side in 13th in the table with 37 points, a comfortable 11 above their opponents but as the most in-form team outside of the top eight, they will have more than survival in 2025-26 as their objective.

Weekend hosts unbeaten at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei since a 1-0 defeat to Holstein Kiel on March 2 have grounds to be happy with their prospects of raking in yet more points, but given that they have won all only one of their last four home games taking full points, they might have to play catch up to their inspired visitors.

One victory in five games is all Union need to edge out Wolfsburg and vault up to 12th spot while an unusual loss could leave St. Pauli in striking distance of Die Eisernen with three points before they end the season.

Heidenheim, led by Frank Schmidt, has recovered from a run of three straight losses by earning four points from their last two games. Given that their relegation rivals have improved as the season comes to an end, they will be anxious to avoid losing this weekend at the very least.

The demotion candidates most recently played out a tense 0-0 draw with bottom club VfL Bochum. Although the manager will be grateful that they were spared a loss, he will believe that his squad lost a great chance to secure their place.

Schmidt's team maintained their 16th-place standing with the point they won last week, one point ahead of Holstein Kiel, who placed them under tremendous strain by defeating Augsburg 3-1 on Sunday.

Nevertheless, Saturday's visitors have performed noticeably better away than at home, and they will feel comfortable of holding onto their slender lead over their rivals this weekend after three victories, two draws, and only one loss in their last six away games.

They need three points to guarantee their spot in the relegation playoffs; if they receive less, they risk dropping into the drop zone before their match against Bremen on the last day.
