Ulsan Hyundai Eyes Strong Start in Club World Cup Clash Against Mamelodi Sundowns
South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai will look to kick off their Club World Cup campaign on a high when they face South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns this Tuesday.
Ulsan secured their spot in the tournament as the highest-ranked eligible team in the AFC’s four-year rankings, while Mamelodi Sundowns earned their place as the second-best team in CAF’s rankings.
This marks Ulsan’s third appearance in the Club World Cup, having previously competed in 2012 and 2020. However, this year’s expanded format presents a fresh challenge. Under manager Kim Pan-gon, the Korean side will see this as their best opportunity to grab a crucial three points in Group F—especially with tough opponents like Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund waiting in the wings.
Ulsan has put their K League campaign on hold to focus on the tournament, though they’ll want to bounce back quickly after a disappointing 3-1 loss to Jeonbuk Motors in late May.
Mamelodi Sundowns Aim to Make Their Mark
Mamelodi Sundowns are no strangers to success, boasting an impressive 15 South African league titles. They arrive at the Club World Cup as CAF’s second-highest-ranked team, and while manager Miguel Cardoso knows the challenge ahead is daunting, Tuesday’s match offers a golden chance to start strong.
After facing Ulsan, Sundowns will take on Borussia Dortmund before wrapping up their group stage against Fluminense on June 25. A top-two finish would be a remarkable achievement for the South African side, who are making only their second Club World Cup appearance (after 2016).
Key to their hopes will be their in-form attackers—Iqraam Rayners (22 goals in 43 games) and Lucas Ribeiro (20 goals in 48 appearances)—who could cause problems for any defense.
With both teams eager to make an early statement, this clash promises plenty of excitement.
