In a highly anticipated clash, the top two teams in Euro 2024 qualifying Group C will face off this Saturday. Ukraine and England, the leading teams in the group, will compete at the Stadion Wrocław in Poland, offering a neutral ground as the backdrop due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This showdown marks a rematch from six months ago when England defeated Ukraine 2-0 at Wembley, a defeat that initially put Sergiy Rebrov's team in a tough spot in the preliminary rounds. However, they bounced back with an exciting 3-3 friendly draw against the 2024 hosts, Germany.
Ukraine found success in competitive action in June, securing a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against North Macedonia and a 1-0 victory over Malta, courtesy of Viktor Tsygankov's penalty. Tsygankov had also netted Ukraine's third goal in the remarkable comeback against North Macedonia.
While Ukraine has a game in hand against their upcoming opponents, they must also face the reigning European champions, Italy, just three days after their encounter with England. Despite their lone defeat to the Three Lions in their last 13 European Championship qualifying matches, the challenge is greater as they won't be playing on familiar territory.
For England, after a near-flawless start to their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with wins over Italy, Ukraine, Malta, and a stunning 7-0 victory over North Macedonia, they are riding a wave of confidence. They have been dominant, with 15 goals in their favor, and have won seven consecutive Euros qualifying matches, conceding only one goal since a 2-1 loss to the Czech Republic in 2019.
England has a history of success against Ukraine, including a 4-0 win that ended Ukraine's Euro 2020 dreams and a 1-0 win in a 2010 World Cup qualifier. However, they will miss key players like Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, John Stones, and Raheem Sterling due to injuries or omissions.
Despite some injury concerns, England remains strong and is expected to be the favorite in this game. However, the match holds greater significance for Ukraine, who will look to overcome defensive issues that have seen them concede two or more goals in three of their last four matches.
Harry Kane, with five goals in four games, and Bukayo Saka, who scored a hat-trick in the 7-0 win against North Macedonia, are key players to watch. Ukraine is undefeated in their last seven home matches and has a solid defensive record at home, so England will need to be at their best to secure three points.
