For Monday's Premier League London derby, Tottenham Hotspur will host Fulham at their headquarters in an effort to exact revenge on the only team to have defeated them this year.

With a penalty shootout loss to the Cottagers in the second round of the EFL Cup, Ange Postecoglou's team had one path to trophies blocked off. However, nine points separate the capital equivalents in the early standings.

Under Postecoglou, the Lilywhites remain the team to beat in the Premier League, barring their 12-yard heartbreak in August, which officially condemned Tottenham to a full 16 years without lifting a major trophy aloft. Postecoglou was awarded a second consecutive Manager of the Month honor for his actions in September.

When Spurs traveled to Luton Town two weekends ago, it appeared as though they would continue their streak of scoring at least two goals in every Premier League game under the Australian. However, profligacy reared its ugly head in a first half that also saw Yves Bissouma dismissed for two bookable offenses, the second of which was a careless dive right in front of the referee.

Nevertheless, the 10 men of Tottenham won thanks to shrewd summer acquisition Micky van de Ven's response to James Maddison's cutback in the second half. With the victory, the North London giants entered the second international break of the season in first place on the table with 20 points, ahead of longtime rivals Arsenal by goals scored.

The only points Spurs have lost this season have come against two of their neighbors, Brentford and Arsenal, sharing the spoils in a pair of four-goal extravaganzas. However, results elsewhere this weekend may potentially drop Tottenham as low as fourth before Monday's London derby.

Although Guus Hiddink and Mike Walker both earned 22 points in their first nine games as managers, Postecoglou set a new Premier League record with 23 points, and Spurs host Fulham having scored in each of their previous 12 home games in the top division.

A sickening leg injury to Sheffield United defender Chris Basham, who was comforted by Tim Ream while other players could not stand to see it, overshadowed Fulham's 3-1 victory over their newly promoted opponents a fortnight ago, when the entire Craven Cottage stood as one.

At the half, both defenses were in control. However, in the second half, Fulham turned up the pressure on the rattled Blades and came out on top thanks to goals from Bobby Decordova-Reid and Willian as well as an unfortunate own goal by Wes Foderingham after Tom Cairney's rocket hit the woodwork and deflected in off the goalkeeper's back.

In Saturday's own-goal club, Antonee Robinson joined Foderingham, but the Cottagers left-back's face was ultimately spared as Marco Silva's team continued their run of winning one and losing one; this statistic does not make for enjoyable reading heading into Monday.

In spite of their wildly uneven start, Fulham now occupies the 12th slot in the standings. However, the Cottagers have only managed one victory in their first four away games of the 2023–24 season, and even that victory over Everton by a score of 1-0 was unlucky.

Fulham ended a nine-game losing streak to Tottenham in the EFL Cup by making a crucial save from 12 yards, but the Cottagers haven't defeated the Lilywhites in the top flight since a 1-0 victory in the final games of the 2012–13 campaign, when ex–Spurs player Dimitar Berbatov returned to haunt White Hart Lane.
