Sporting Lisbon, quarterfinalists in the Europa League last season, will begin their campaign this year by traveling to Austria to play Sturm Graz on Thursday.

Sporting defeated Arsenal in the elimination stages en route to the quarterfinals before losing to Juventus.

Sporting will make their season-opening European debut here after regrettably placing fourth in the Primeira Liga and completely missing out on the Champions League.

Sporting was left with a Europa League slot, but Braga advanced to the group stage and took the final position ahead of them.

But thanks to a strong start, Ruben Amorim's team has rapidly moved over their frustrations from the previous campaign.

Sporting's victory over Moreirense on Sunday kept them tied for first place in the league with Porto and unexpected early pacesetters Boavista on points.

A favorable home schedule may enable Amorim to lay a significant amount of weight on them succeeding in their European group.

Rio Ave, Farense, and Arouca all have impending league games in the same period as their first three Europa League matches, thus Amorim might still make a great team choice.

The Lions haven't advanced past the round of 32 since last season, when they made it as far as the quarterfinals. Round-of-32 eliminations have become all too common.

Sporting hasn't actually appeared to be a serious contender since losing to CSKA Moscow in the 2005 UEFA Cup final.

Amorim will be optimistic that his club can compete despite the high caliber of the other teams in this season's Europa League, especially after defeating Arsenal last season.

Sporting has had a great domestic start to the season, but Sturm won't make it simple for them.

Sturm might now be leading the Bundesliga if it weren't for David Schnegg's red card early on during Austria Klagenfurt's home game.

They were held to a 0-0 tie as a result of the dismissal, and after seven games, they are currently two points behind Red Bull Salzburg, the league's regular dominant force.

Though they have now won five games, including two victories over LASK Linz and Austria Vienna, their most stunning performance thus far has been their 2-2 draw with Salzburg.

If they continue to play as well as they did over the weekend, they may be able to elude this intimidating group.

Christian Ilzer's team lost 7-2 to PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League playoff match last month, and those two games raise serious concerns about their ability to reproduce their home success on the continent.
