When Spain and Scotland square off in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Thursday night at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville, Spain will be looking to get retribution against Scotland.

At Hampden Park on matchday two earlier this year, La Roja unexpectedly fell to the Tartan Army 2-0 thanks to two goals from Scott McTominay. After suffering their first loss under new head coach Luis de la Fuente in just his second game in charge against Scotland in Glasgow, La Roja has responded well, putting together a four-game winning streak across two different competitions and winning their first-ever UEFA Nations League trophy in the process.

They defeated Croatia in a penalty shootout in the final after defeating Italy 2-1 in the Nations League semi-finals. Since then, they have racked up two resounding victories against Georgia and Cyprus in the Euro 2024 qualifying round.

In fact, Spain's captain Alvaro Morata's hat-trick helped his team to a 7-1 victory over Georgia on the road last month, only four days before they racked up six unanswered points against Cyprus to keep themselves in the running for Group A's top spot.

With a game in hand over Scotland, De la Fuente's team still has a lot of work to do if they hope to unseat the Tartan Army from the top spot in Group A. A victory on Thursday would bring La Roja to within three points of Scotland going into their final three qualification games.

Spain, who is currently ranked 10th in the world according to FIFA, will be confident of winning on Thursday because they have won all 24 of their previous home Euro qualifying games dating back to October 2003, including a 3-1 triumph over Scotland in their most recent encounter in October 2011.

In addition to maintaining their unblemished start in Group A with victories over Norway, Georgia, and Cyprus, Scotland is still living in the glory of their epic victory over Spain seven months ago, their first versus La Roja in 39 years.

The Tartan Army won consecutive matches by an aggregate score of 5-0 against Georgia and Cyprus last month to put them on the verge of qualifying for their second consecutive European Championships after a stunning smash-and-grab 2-1 away victory over Norway in March, a game they were losing with just three minutes remaining.

FIFA's number-31-ranked team, led by Steve Clarke, has gone unbeaten in each of their last nine competitive games, winning eight of them. To qualify for the 2018 Euros in Germany, Steve Clarke's team simply needs to avoid losing to Spain on Thursday. Scotland also needs to win six of their remaining three qualification games in order to finish first in Group A.

Spirits are undoubtedly high in the Scotland camp right now, but they'll be looking to recover from a 3-1 friendly loss to their archrivals England last month as they try to win in Seville for the first time on Thursday. In fact, Scotland's only victory in Spain was a memorable 6-2 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid back in 1963. The Tartan Army have lost both of their previous two trips to Seville, falling 4-1 to Brazil at the 1982 World Cup finals and then narrowly losing 1-0 to Spain in a 1985 World Cup qualifier under former manager Jock Stein.
