Following a 5-0 victory over Villamuriel, Rayo overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Unionista de Salamanca 3-2 in the second round. Later, they defeated second-tier Racing Ferrol 3-1, thanks to goals from Jorge de Frutos and Pacha Espino.
