When Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid resume their separate La Liga campaigns on Sunday night, they will both be hoping to recover from heartbreaking losses in Europe.

With just eight points from their first eight games of the season, the home team is now ranked 14th in the table, while Atletico is in fourth place with 16 points from their first eight games.

Real Sociedad's season hasn't started off well; in their first eight games, the Basque team has only managed eight points, placing them in 14th place, three points above the relegation zone.

With only six goals in eight league games this season, Imanol Alguacil's team has struggled to score goals and is currently eight points off of fourth place in the standings.

Last weekend, the White and Blues defeated Valencia 3-0 in the league, easily their greatest performance of the year. However, they were unable to capitalize on the positive outcome, losing 2-1 at home to Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday night.

With only one point from their first two Europa League games, Real Sociedad has, to put it mildly, disappointed this season despite having a great group.

The Basque club has not defeated the Red and Whites in Spain's top flight since September 2019, and they have lost their past three league games against Atletico.

In the Madrid derby last weekend, Atletico managed to salvage a late draw against Real Madrid; nevertheless, on Wednesday night, they were surprised by a 4-0 loss to Benfica in Portugal in the Champions League.

This season's first defeat in any competition might be disastrous for Real Sociedad, as the heavyweights of the city will undoubtedly be motivated to win this weekend.

With a record of four victories and four draws to accumulate 16 points, they are now in fourth place in the table following a strong start to their 2024–25 La Liga campaign. They are only two points behind Real Madrid in second place.

Diego Simeone's team is unlikely to be significant title challengers this season, but a victory this weekend would put them in a good position before the October international break.

In the equivalent game at the end of the previous season, Atletico defeated Real Sociedad 2-0. Since April 2018, they have only suffered a single defeat against their rivals in the top flight of Spain.
