Real Madrid is on fire right now, with an impressive eight-game winning streak across all competitions. In the EuroLeague, they’re on a roll, too, boasting six straight wins. Currently sitting at 12-9, they’re in eighth place in the standings. Their latest win was a nail-biter against Maccabi Tel Aviv, a thrilling 116-113 finish.
That game against Maccabi was a real spectacle, setting a season-high for combined points in a EuroLeague matchup. It had all the drama of an NBA game, with 51 free throws attempted—and only one miss, thanks to Facundo Campazzo (9/10). The Argentine point guard was on fire, leading the charge with 31 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds in just 28 minutes.
Mario Hezonja also showed up big, contributing 25 points after battling injuries early on. Meanwhile, Dzanan Musa is back in form, and with the help of Walter Tavares, these three are proving to be the backbone of Real Madrid’s success. Plus, the return of Andres Feliz and Usman Garuba from injury has really strengthened their rotation, while Xavier Rathan-Mayes has stepped up his defense after being sidelined for a few games.
Olympiacos, further to Real Madrid, is one of the most powerful teams in the EuroLeague now, it has won six games in a row. They currently stand at 15-6 in the EuroLeague and are leading their group after that memorable 102-101 overtime victory on the road against Baskonia.
It was only a few days ago that Olympiacos absolutely crippled Bayern Munich with a 112 to 69 drubbing – Santiago ‘Sasha’ Vezenkov accumulated an astonishing 45 points, making him the third highest-scoring player in a game in the modern EuroLeague. But, in Vitoria, their win was much less convincing. This lack of key players was apparent – Moses Wright is injured, Keenan Evans has played no games this season, Thomas Walkup has back pain, and Tyler Dorsey was out sick.
Demarco Walkup as a defensive player and forward Billy Dorsey as a bench mobility shooter were particularly missed. Olympiacos bolstered their squad this year by raising the player salary limit by €7.5 million from the previous season and spending almost €6 million on their two main protagonists, Vezenkov and Fournier. Up to this year, this paid off well: Vezenkov scoring 19 points against Baskonia, and Fournier scoring 22 points, tied with Shaquielle McKissic. Nigel Williams-Goss also gave a good account of himself. Olympiacos has a well-developed team roster with a high number of highly skilled players on the bench which led to consistent dividends.
However, the game against Real Madrid dictates a necessity of hiding their flaws and at the same time exploding all the advantages to the maximum level. Olympiacos is the second most efficient offense in the EuroLeague boasting a 123 points per 100 possessions contribution. Teams hit on 38% from the three-point range and on 58% on the two-point range. Best of all is their 30 assists per 100 possessions, the best in the NBA.
Real Madrid now has the second-best defensive rating in the EuroLeague, giving up only 111 points per 100 possessions, thanks to these variables. They are ranked seventh offensively, but they have a ton of room to grow. Real Madrid can overwhelm any opponent when their offense is operating at peak efficiency.
Real Madrid needs to set their own pace and take advantage of Olympiacos' shallow backcourt in their next matchup. It will also be critical to preserve parity in three-point shooting and secure defensive rebounds. Although Olympiacos is very good from beyond the arc, Real Madrid has the means to successfully negate that strength.
Olympiacos must rely on defensive tenacity and hope that Moustapha Fall and Nikola Milutinov can surpass Real Madrid's frontcourt if they want to have a chance in Madrid. Despite having below-average rebounding numbers, their great shooting efficiency makes this somewhat predictable. In order to win this difficult game, Vezenkov and Fournier must produce offensively, and Olympiacos can aim for a low turnover rate.
