The current Spanish champions Real Madrid are set to play their 20th La Liga match of the current season when they host Las Palmas on Sunday afternoon.
Currently, Los Blancos occupies the second position in La Liga point list, one point below the leaders Atletico Madrid while Las Palmas occupies the fourteenth position in La Liga obtaining 22 points in eighteen matches in this campaign of the season.
Real Madrid of course have played four times since their last league match which was a 2-1 victory over Valencia at the beginning of the year 2025; Real Madrid were down 1-0 to Valencia and reduced to 10 men in the final quarter of that particular match at Mestalla but still emerged winners get three critical match points.
Having kicked off the month in Copa del Rey, Los Blancos beat Deportiva Minera and Celta Vigo to qualify for the quarter final stage of the feast but lost 5-2 to Barcelona last weekend in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Real Madrid are second in La Liga, five points ahead of third placed Barcelona and just one point behind the leaders Atletico who are in phenomenal form at the moment and this side may have opened up a four point lead at the summit by the time this particular fixture comes to fruition.
Real Madrid will doubtless have their work cut out to maintain their league crown this season also and they are 20th in a general Group E table before their last two group matches against Red Bull Salzburg and Brest.
There is some history on offer for the visitors on Sunday afternoon as Real Madrid, who have the second-best home record in the division, have won eight of their nine league games at the Bernabeu this season and have never lost to Las Palmas in front of their own fans.
Although Las Palmas had a very challenging start to the 2024–25 season, there have been many encouraging signs since Diego Martinez was hired as head coach in October. In his 13 games as manager, the Spaniard has won eight, drawn one, and lost four.
With a record of six victories, four draws, and nine losses from their 19 games, Los Amarillos are currently in 14th place in La Liga with 22 points, six points above the relegation zone.
In fact, Pio Pio has won three of their nine away league games this season and avoided defeat in four of them. In the rematch between the two teams back in August, they held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw.
Las Palmas has a memorable 3-3 draw at the Bernabeu under their belt, dating back to March 2017. However, their start to 2025 has been tough. They suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Elche in the Copa del Rey on January 5, and then fell 2-1 to Getafe in the league last weekend.
With only league action to focus on now, Martinez's team has been impressive in attack, scoring 24 goals in 19 matches so far. This puts them ahead of teams like Osasuna, Real Betis, Sevilla, Valencia, and Real Sociedad in terms of goals scored.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, will be missing both Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric on Sunday due to suspension. Fran Garcia’s status is still up in the air after he picked up an injury in Thursday’s 5-2 win over Celta in the Copa del Rey. Adding to their woes, Eduardo Camavinga is now sidelined for at least three weeks due to a fresh injury.
Regarding Las Palmas, Marvin Park and Jose Campana are serious doubts for the away team this weekend, and Daley Sinkgraven and Viti will miss the match because of injury issues.
Last time out, Adnan Januzaj scored against Getafe after coming off the bench. The former Manchester United attacker might start, although Martinez is unlikely to change his starting lineup.
With Fabio Silva heading the line—the 22-year-old missed a penalty against Getafe but has five goals and two assists in 14 La Liga games this season—Jaime Mata and Marc Cardona are also expected to be included among the substitutes.
