After their Spanish Super Cup champions lose against Barcelona, Real Madrid will be eyeing a better performance when they host Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabeu in Copa del Rey second round Wednesday.

Los Blancos qualified for the last 16 with a 5-0 thrashing of Deportivo Minera while Celta from agoal down defeated Racing Santander in the third round.

This month of January was busy for Real Madrid compared to Celta since Real Madrid has played 4 matches this year before mid January but Celta played only 2 matches in this month.

Los Blancos started the new year with a 2-1 league victory against Valencia and a Destruction cup performance against Minera before they embarked on a trip to Saudi Arabia to defend the Spanish Super Cup they won at the end of 2024.

Real Madrid won comfortably 3-0 against Mallorca which saw Carlo Ancelotti through to the final but Sunday was a poor show for the Spanish giants which was 5-2 thrashing by Barcelona after Mbappe put Real Madrid on front foot with an early goal.

Worse still was that the result was Barcelona’s second big El Clasico loss in the last three months after they lost 4-0 to the same Barcelona side in the month of October during the La Liga encounter at the Camp Nou.

Real Madrid lost the chance to win the Saudi Crown Prince Cup and will look for no weaknesses in Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Celta with Real Madrid considering to lift the trophy for the 21st time.

They are a confident side in front of their fans having won in their previous five home league games on the congress by a tally of 16-2.

Real Madrid has also performed well against Celta lately, winning all nine of their previous matches, including a 2-1 triumph at Balaidos in October.

Celta had to arrange three cup matches in order to get to the Spanish capital, whereas Real Madrid qualified for the Copa del Rey in the third round.
The Galician team defeated UD San Pedro and Salamanca UDS with 12 goals in the first two rounds, but they had to put in a lot more effort against second-tier Racing Santander in their most recent Copa del Rey match.

Alfon Gonzalez scored in stoppage time to give Celta a 3-2 triumph after the team pulled even with an own goal in the 86th minute to overcome a 2-1 deficit against 10-man Santander.

Los Celestes lost 2-1 at Vallecas on Friday, dropping them to 12th place in La Liga after failing to achieve the same level of success against Rayo Vallecano.

Now that they know they will need to surprise everyone if they are to maintain their hopes of winning the Copa del Rey for the first time in their history, they will be totally focused on Thursday's journey to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Celta might be able to capitalize on their performance at this point in the previous season's competition, where they advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 away win over Valencia.

Although the 2-1 away triumph did occur in the Copa del Rey, with Celta sealing a 4-2 aggregate victory to advance on that occasion, the visitors will be well aware that they haven't defeated Real Madrid since January 2017.

Due to anterior cruciate ligament injuries, Real Madrid will be without Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal for the remainder of the season.
