On Sunday evening, Estadio Benito Villamarin will set the stage for an exciting La Liga clash as Real Betis take on Villarreal, with both teams hot on the heels of fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao in Spain’s top division.

Real Betis have been in top form recently, climbing to sixth in the La Liga standings, tied on points with fifth-placed Villarreal. Both sides are just six points shy of the coveted Champions League qualification spots.

Fresh off a 2-0 win against Jagiellonia Bialystok in the first leg of their Conference League quarter-final on Thursday, Manuel Pellegrini’s men are well-positioned to advance to the semi-finals. In La Liga, Betis are unbeaten across their last seven games, securing six victories along the way, including an impressive 1-1 draw against league leaders Barcelona last weekend.

With 13 wins, nine draws, and eight losses from their 30 matches this season, Betis sit on 48 points in sixth place, trailing Athletic Bilbao by six points. A Champions League berth is within sight, but even locking in a Europa League spot for 2025-26 would mark a stellar season for the Seville side, who haven’t claimed fourth in La Liga since 2005.

Betis are aiming to complete a league double over Villarreal this term, having edged them out 2-1 in December’s reverse fixture. However, Villarreal got the better of Betis with a 3-2 victory in last season’s corresponding match.

Villarreal, free from European commitments this year, have had a full week to gear up for this encounter. Their last outing was a 0-0 stalemate against Athletic Bilbao on April 6. Marcelino’s Yellow Submarine also secured a 2-1 victory at Getafe in their most recent away match. With 13 wins, nine draws, and seven losses from 29 games, they too have amassed 48 points this season.

Crucially, Villarreal has a game left against both Real Betis and Athletic that may be very important at the conclusion of the season. A victory in this game would greatly increase their prospects of qualifying for European football the following season.

This season, the Yellow Submarine have been a lot of fun to watch. They have scored 51 goals, which is third in the division after Barcelona and Real Madrid, but they have also let up 39 goals, which is a lot given where they are in the standings.

There was much space for improvement this season after Villarreal finished seventh in a lackluster 2023–24 campaign, and Marcelino's club is now hoping to cap off a successful season.
