Glasgow Rangers are expected to welcome St Johnstone to Ibrox Stadium in the Scottish Premiership fixture on Sunday evening after a barren run in 4-1 humiliating defeat by Lyon.

The hosts are third in the division with 13 points garnered from a fourth win, one draw and a loss in their six league matches while the visitors are tenth with four points from a win, a draw and five consecutive losses in their seven games.

Following their title victory in the Scottish Premiership, for the first time with a record of 102 points and no-loss record in 2020-2021 seasons, Rangers have failed to replicate the same in the next year seasons.

Thus, the Gers have progressively faded away from Celtic last season, finishing four points ahead of Celtic in 2021-22, seven points ahead in 2022-23 and eight points ahead in 2023-24.

Philippe Clement who took charge at the beginning of the season October 2023, would have been expecting to at least catch up with Celtic this year or at worse dethrone them, but a—or at worse—start now puts the Beligans five points behind the Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

After having won only the initial match of the campaign, Rangers have fared better in their subsequent matches, being winners in six and losers in two of their subsequent eight.

Clement will be eager to build on that performance and as well recover from a loss that saw them lose 4-0 to Lyon in their last game when they play St Johnstone on Sunday.

It is therefore anticipated that the home team – the Gers will be such a machine to beat especially bearing in mind St Johnstone has been a miserable team in the current games coming to this one without any win in the previous six games.

Due to a range of injuries, the hosts will be missing Danilo, Oscar Cortes, Rabbi Matondo, and Ridvan Yilmaz for this game.

Other than that, a lineup like to the one that defeated Hibernian 1-0 may play here, however Cyriel Dessers is anticipated to rejoin the squad in lieu of Hamza Igamane.

Although Sam McClelland and Uche Ikpeazu are expected to return later this month, the tourists will be without their services.

Many changes to the starting lineup are anticipated for Sunday's match, which is the first under new manager Valakari. This is especially expected after the team lost 6-0 their previous match.

In that span, the Saints have suffered five losses and one draw, their most recent being a 6-0 setback against Celtic. As a result of this run of results, Craig Levein was fired and Andy Kirk assumed interim leadership.

Prior to their forthcoming match against Rangers, Simo Valakari, a former player for Riga FC, was named as their new manager. With a successful outcome, the new manager will be aiming for an instant influence on his team.
