Portugal, already qualified for Euro 2024, concludes their impressive qualification campaign against Iceland in Lisbon this Sunday. Roberto Martinez's team tops Group J with a flawless nine-game winning streak, securing 27 points and a spot in Pot 1 for the finals draw. In contrast, Iceland sits fourth, missing the chance to qualify.
Martinez has made a strong start as Portugal's head coach, guiding the team to nine consecutive victories. Despite exiting the 2022 World Cup in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 loss to Morocco, Portugal has remained undefeated since last December, dominating their Euro 2024 qualifiers with nine wins.
With 34 goals scored and only two conceded, Portugal's form has been impressive, highlighted by a recent 2-0 win over Liechtenstein. While already assured of a Pot 1 position, anticipation builds around their performance in the upcoming summer tournament, especially after a disappointing Euro 2020 where they only reached the round of 16 despite winning Euro 2016.
In their final match on Sunday, Portugal aims for a tenth consecutive victory. Although the game holds less significance in terms of qualification, Martinez will continue evaluating his squad, with players vying to secure spots in the final selection for the tournament in Germany next summer.
Iceland has faced challenges in this phase, with a record of three victories, one draw, and five defeats in nine matches, placing them fourth with 10 points.
Slovakia secured qualification alongside Portugal with a 4-2 win against Iceland. Luxembourg and Bosnia & Herzegovina are set for the playoffs.
Although Age Hareide's team still has a slim chance through the UEFA Nations League B playoffs, the path to the tournament is tough.
Iceland gained attention by qualifying for their inaugural European Championship in 2016, even reaching the quarter-finals and garnering new supporters.
While they participated in the 2018 World Cup, Iceland missed Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup finals, making their probable absence from Euro 2024 less surprising.
The Portugal team under Coach Martinez is anticipated to make several changes for their upcoming match. Diogo Costa might return as goalkeeper, while Joao Palhinha, Ruben Dias, Raphael Guerreiro, and Goncalo Inacio could be part of the starting lineup in the game in Lisbon, differing from the team that played against Liechtenstein.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was subbed off in the 67th minute after scoring in the last game, is likely to feature in the starting eleven. Despite being 38 years old, he's demonstrated his importance with 10 goals during the qualification campaign, reaffirming his key role for Portugal.
Injuries have sidelined Matheus Nunes, Pepe, Rafael Leao, and Nelson Semedo, while Diogo Dalot withdrew from the squad for personal reasons.
As for Iceland, Arnor Traustason's injury from their previous match against Slovakia rules him out for the upcoming game. Aron Gunnarsson might step in for a starting position, and there are expected changes in the forward positions as well.
Arnor Sigurdsson might retain his place, but Alfred Finnbogason and Andri Gudjohnsen are likely to be brought in for the attacking positions during Sunday night's match.
