Braga travels out to Greece to play Panathinaikos in the second leg of their Champions League qualifying playoff match on Tuesday with a precarious 2-1 lead from the first leg.
Artur Jorge's team was only seconds away from leading Athens by two goals, but Panathinaikos' dramatic comeback has given the Greek giants a good opportunity of escaping with their lives.
Panathinaikos had little to fear when they faced Braga at Estadio Municipal since they had a full eight days to rest and recover following their thrilling penalty-shootout victory over Marseille in round three. Ivan Jovanovic's team was able to contain their opponents until the halftime siren.
Since Panathinaikos had eight full days to rest and heal after their thrilling penalty-shootout triumph over Marseille in round three, they had little to fear when they met Braga at Estadio Municipal. Up until the halftime siren, Ivan Jovanovic's team was able to control their adversaries.
With goals from Adam Gnezda Cerin, Fotis Ioannidis, and Benjamin Verbic, Panathinaikos was able to start their new domestic campaign off strong. The Shamrock has now gone 12 games without losing in their home stadium in Athens since being defeated 3-0 by PAOK in January.
Panathinaikos could qualify for the Champions League group stage for the first time since the 2010–11 season if they successfully overcame their first-leg deficit, but even if Jovanovic's team is unable to overcome the odds, a seven-year absence from Europa League play would still be a significant improvement.
A Champions League homecoming is now within reach for Braga, who have often entered the field on Thursday nights to the Europa League anthem despite competing in the continent's secondary event each of the last four seasons.
In the third qualifying round, Jorge's team destroyed Serbian rivals Backa Topola 7-1 on the road. They also bounced back from a shaky start to their Primeira Liga season to defeat Chaves 4-2 away from home last week before defeating Panathinaikos.
While Braga's opponents did have domestic issues to attend to over the weekend, they were fortunate to have a break from Primeira Liga play to be ready for a difficult trip to Athens, where history will also be on their side.
In fact, the Archbishops' only two Champions League actual appearances to date have come through qualifying, as they did in 2010, two years before a tense penalty-shootout victory over Udinese, when they defeated Sevilla 5-3 over two legs. However, the less said about their group-stage records on both occasions, the better.
