When Manchester City visits St. James' Park to play Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon, they will try to solidify their lead atop the Premier League standings.

The two clubs square up for the first time since March, when Bernardo Silva's two goals helped the Citizens win 2-0 at home in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Newcastle's first four Premier League games yielded 10 points, but the team's impressive performance disguised a lackluster start. Last weekend, they lost 3-1 at Craven Cottage to Fulham, their first away loss of the season.

Raul Jimenez and Emile Smith Rowe each scored goals inside the first 22 minutes to put the Cottagers ahead, but Harvey Barnes' third goal in as many games in the first minute of the second half gave the Magpies a chance. Nevertheless, Reiss Nelson's goal in stoppage time gave Fulham the victory and maximum points.

Even though the Magpies are only three points from the top and sit sixth in the table, Eddie Howe acknowledged after the game that their error-filled loss to Fulham was the "worst we have played" this season. Nevertheless, the supporters of the team know that they need to perform better if they want to see their team stay in the top half of the table.

Tuesday's EFL Cup third-round match between League Two team AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle was rescheduled due to "extensive overnight flooding" that caused a sinkhole in the field at Cherry Red Records Stadium. Since then, the match has been moved to St. James' Park on October 1; the victors will play Chelsea in the fourth round.

As a result, Howe and company have been granted a few more days of recovery before facing Man City in the Premier League, whom they have only defeated once in the previous 33 top-flight encounters (a 2-1 home win in January 2019 under Rafael Benitez).

Pep Guardiola made nine changes to his starting lineup between the end of Man City's thrilling 2-2 Premier League draw with Arsenal on Sunday and the start of the EFL Cup third round against Watford on Tuesday, all in less than 49 hours.

Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes' goals in the first half, however, gave the Citizens a 2-1 victory. The Hornets almost had a comeback as Tom Ince's incredible goal gave them a late equalizer, but the hosts managed to hold on for a narrow triumph.

The eight-time EFL Cup champions will face Tottenham Hotspur away in the fourth round next month. However, their immediate focus shifts back to the Premier League, where they aim to extend their unbeaten run in 2024 to 25 matches against Newcastle. Only Chelsea, with 26 unbeaten games in 2008, have had a longer streak from the start of a calendar year in Premier League history.

Manchester City are optimistic about their chances on Saturday, having secured more Premier League wins (31), away victories (12), and goals (101) against Newcastle than any other team in the division. They have also scored in their last 31 league encounters with Newcastle, the longest streak of one team scoring against another in Premier League history.

While City will be mindful of Newcastle's 10-match unbeaten home run, they were the last team to defeat the Magpies at St James' Park, securing a 3-2 win in January with a stoppage-time goal by Oscar Bobb. However, they did suffer a 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle in the EFL Cup third round around the same time last year.

Four Newcastle players are still out with injuries: Callum Wilson (back), Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles (both knee), and Lewis Miley (ankle). The former is not anticipated to be back until after the next international break.

Howe has also disclosed that top striker Alexander Isak is questionable with a toe injury and has not participated in first-team training this week. Matt Targett will miss this weekend's game owing to "a flare-up of eczema".Man City will have to make due without their great midfield player Rodri, who will require surgery to repair damage to his knee ligament and miss the remainder of the year.
