Marseille aims to bounce back from their lackluster performance last weekend as they host relegation-bound Montpellier HSC at the Stade Velodrome in Ligue 1 this Saturday.

After a 3-0 loss to Monaco, which saw Roberto De Zerbi’s squad surrender second place in the league, Marseille’s fans are eager for a strong response in what should be a winnable match. The defeat not only exposed defensive frailties but also sparked further doubts about De Zerbi’s fit for the job. Midfielder Adrien Rabiot publicly called out his teammates for their poor mentality during the game.

That loss marked Marseille’s fifth defeat in seven matches, matching the number of losses they endured in their first 22 games this season. De Zerbi’s side has been leaky at the back, letting in 11 goals over their past four matches. Among the top seven teams vying for Champions League spots, Marseille has the worst defensive record, having conceded 41 goals—a statistic that could prove costly if their slump continues.

However, the Stade Velodrome remains a stronghold, with Marseille securing victories in five of their seven home Ligue 1 games in 2025. A win against Montpellier is crucial to pull away from the teams chasing them. Historically, Marseille dominates this matchup, losing just twice in 29 home games against Montpellier in the top flight and boasting an 11-game unbeaten streak, during which they’ve netted 26 goals.

The gap between the two clubs has never been wider in their Ligue 1 history, with Montpellier all but certain to face relegation soon.

All members of the playing group appear to have thrown in the towel as they barely fought in a dreadful 2-0 loss to Angers last weekend, limping to another loss.

The Montpellier fans, who have expressed their dissatisfaction with the outcomes on the field throughout the season, rioted during the home match against fellow relegation rivals Saint-Etienne, which was called off a few weeks ago.

With just 18 points remaining, Montpellier is 14 points from safety. Although Le Havre's away match against PSG may save them from being officially relegated this weekend, it is just a matter of time from here.
