On Wednesday night, the 2. Bundesliga team Fortuna Dusseldorf will play the dominant Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal semifinal.

The visitors will be hoping to break the incredible record and guarantee their spot in the championship game, while the hosts remain unbeaten in any competitive game this season.

This season, Xabi Alonso's team has been outstanding. They have participated in 39 games in all tournaments, and astonishingly, they have not lost throughout that time.

Leverkusen has been in danger of losing a few times in the last few weeks, but their ability to rally late in each game to maintain the run is evidence of their tenacity.

The most recent of those occurred in the Bundesliga leaders' previous match against Hoffenheim, where they trailed 1-0 going into the final minutes of play. However, two goals in the final seconds from Robert Andrich and Patrik Schick allowed Alonso's team to turn the tide and win thrillingly.

With the Bundesliga championship now inevitable and a trip to the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals already guaranteed by Schick's incredible last-minute comeback, Leverkusen may yet pull off a spectacular treble come season's end.

Die Werkself are heavy favorites to win this match going into it, but there's little space for complacency in this one since the DFB-Pokal has produced many stunning surprises this season, none greater than the loss of Bayern Munich by fellow semi-finalists Saarbrucken.

Dusseldorf will be aware of how big the job is, but they will be depending on another David vs Goliath kind of situation in this semifinal.

Daniel Thioune's team would face an all-lower division championship if they could accomplish that improbable accomplishment. In the first of the two semi-finals, 3. Liga Saarbrucken will play second-tier Kaiserslautern.

The visitors are in third position in the 2. Bundesliga and are still vying for an automatic promotion berth, which would mean returning to the top level for the first time since the 2019–20 campaign. They have been having a successful season.

They have won seven and drawn four of their 14 road encounters, which has been their strongest point in the league. However, they will face a far stiffer test when they visit the BayArena.

Since their lone victory over the hosts in 1996, Dusseldorf has not defeated Leverkusen. Now, they will be hoping that their on-loan talisman Christos Tzolis, who has scored 19 goals this season, can help them not only secure a historic spot in this competition's final but also their first victory over the hosts in 28 years.

Dusseldorf last visited that stage 44 years ago, when they won the second of their two DFB-Pokal championships in 1980. Despite this, Dusseldorf has still won more than Leverkusen, who have only won one domestic cup, in 1992–1993.
