Leeds United, already promoted, will push for the Championship title on Monday as they host playoff-bound Bristol City at Elland Road.
Leeds are determined to overtake Burnley for first place and reach 100 points, having clinched their Premier League return. Meanwhile, Bristol City aim to secure a top-six position.
After Leeds’ commanding six-goal thrashing of Stoke City on Easter Monday, with Joel Piroe scoring four times at home, Sheffield United’s loss to Burnley confirmed Leeds’ top-flight return.
With celebrations brief to quash rumors of his potential sacking, head coach Daniel Farke now has a chance to etch his name in Leeds’ history.
Leeds have netted 89 goals in the Championship this season, surpassed only by their 98 in 1927-28, and two more victories would mark their first-ever 100-point campaign.
With a goal difference 14 better than Burnley’s, this would also clinch the title, giving Leeds plenty to fight for against Bristol City and then Plymouth Argyle.
Leeds are unbeaten in their last 10 matches against Bristol City since a 1-0 defeat at Ashton Gate in 2016, following a goalless draw in October, making history firmly in their favor.
Bristol City have endured a tough time at Elland Road, losing eight of their last nine away matches against Leeds, with their most recent league victory there dating back to November 1979.
The Robins still have the playoffs within reach, but a 3-1 defeat to Luton Town in their last outing means they have yet to officially secure a top-six finish. They struggled badly at Kenilworth Road, failing to register a single shot on target in the first half before conceding three goals after the break.
Despite that setback, City remain in fifth place, helped by Coventry City and Middlesbrough also dropping points, maintaining a comfortable four-point lead with only two matches left.
A win in West Yorkshire would seal their spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2008, a year when they went on to lose the final to Hull City.
However, Liam Manning's side face an uphill battle, having won just once in their last 14 Championship away games, making it a major challenge to spoil Leeds’ celebrations.
In fact, Bristol City's previous league victory at Elland Road dates back to November 1979, and they have lost eight of their past nine road games against Leeds.
Although City is presently aiming for the playoffs, they have not yet secured a spot in the final top six after losing 3-1 to Luton Town in their most recent game.
They failed to secure a playoff spot at Kenilworth Road after failing to score a single goal in the first half and then giving up three goals in the second half.
