In Serie A's highly anticipated Saturday night match, Inter Milan and Juventus, the top two teams in the league, will face off in the eagerly-awaited Derby d'Italia at San Siro. Inter currently holds a one-point lead over Juventus in the standings, with an additional advantage of having one game in hand.

As the clash approaches, Inter is in excellent form, securing five consecutive victories in 2024, including successful defenses of the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia. The Nerazzurri's last comparable start to a calendar year was 17 years ago, and they aim to replicate that feat by defeating their rivals in the 248th Derby d'Italia.

Under Simone Inzaghi's management, Inter has scored in all 21 of their top-flight fixtures this season. A win with goals in this upcoming game would make them only the second club in Serie A history to score in 22 straight matches from the beginning of a season, a record currently held by Juventus.

Despite Juventus' recent resurgence, Inter, who secured a third consecutive Supercoppa last month, maintains an edge over them in recent cup clashes. Many pundits still consider Inter as favorites to top the league in the ongoing title race.

With AC Milan trailing behind the two main contenders, the Serie A title race seems to be evolving into a two-horse race. The stakes are exceptionally high for Sunday evening's match. Although Inter has secured championships and outperformed Juventus in other competitions in recent years, beating them in Serie A has proven to be a more formidable challenge.

In the November clash between Juventus and Inter, the match ended in a 1-1 draw with goals from Dusan Vlahovic and Lautaro Martinez in Turin. This result contributed to Juventus accumulating seven points in their last three league encounters with Inter. A victory in the upcoming match in Milan would propel Juventus above Inter, marking a significant shift in their Serie A standing after a period of being overshadowed by their rivals.

Under the management of Max Allegri, Juventus approaches the San Siro fixture with confidence, holding 53 points. Historically, whenever Juventus has reached this point total in the season, they have gone on to finish in the first position in the league.

The team's recent performance, including seven wins in eight games across various competitions and a place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, has helped them close the gap to Inter. However, their unbeaten streak this year was interrupted by a 1-1 draw against Empoli last week, where an early red card for Arkadiusz Milik posed a challenge. Despite the setback, the prolific Dusan Vlahovic, enjoying a resurgence in 2024, managed to score in the second half. Tommaso Baldanzi later equalized for Empoli.

Following the draw, Max Allegri is on the verge of reaching the milestone of 1000 points in Serie A as a coach. A victory in the upcoming match on Sunday would not only achieve this feat but also elevate Juventus to the top of the Serie A standings.

Simone Inzaghi, who holds a 4-2 advantage over Max Allegri in their head-to-head Derby d'Italia encounters, faces no significant player absences this week, except for Juan Cuadrado, the former Juventus wing-back, who is sidelined due to injury.

Italy internationals Francesco Acerbi and Federico Dimarco are expected to rejoin the starting lineup for the hosts. Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu, both returning from suspension, are set to be back in action.

Captain and leading goal-scorer Lautaro Martinez will once again team up with Marcus Thuram in the forward line. Martinez has scored 19 goals in 19 league appearances this season and needs just one more Serie A goal to become the third Inter player to achieve 20 goals in three consecutive campaigns.

On the Juventus side, Dusan Vlahovic, the primary striker, has not scored in his last seven games against both Milan clubs at San Siro. However, he comes into the match with a strong record of five goals in his last three outings. With Arkadiusz Milik suspended, Vlahovic is expected to start.

Despite a relatively quiet winter transfer window, Juventus secured the loan signing of Carlos Alcaraz from Southampton. Alcaraz is likely to begin on the bench, as Adrien Rabiot may recover from a calf problem in time for the match.

Federico Chiesa continues to struggle with a muscular issue but might make an appearance as a substitute. On the other hand, Moise Kean will not be available after a move to Atletico Madrid fell through due to a failed medical examination.
