Manchester United Wrap Up Post-Season Tour with Hong Kong Friendly
Manchester United will play their final post-season match against the Hong Kong national team on Friday afternoon, looking to end their Asia tour on a positive note.
The Red Devils suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, leaving fans frustrated after another underwhelming performance.
Another Defeat Extends United’s Struggles
Before Wednesday’s match, manager Ruben Amorim spoke of a "fresh start" following a dismal 2024-25 season. However, those words rang hollow as United were booed by sections of the 72,000-strong crowd in Malaysia for their lack of attacking sharpness.
The defeat came just hours after Wolves forward Matheus Cunha was cleared for a medical ahead of a £62.5 million move to Old Trafford—a signing that fans hope will bolster their misfiring attack.
A 71st-minute strike from Maung Maung Lwin sealed United’s fate, marking their 12th loss since January. This latest setback follows their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, which confirmed they will miss out on European football next season—only the second time in 35 years.
Winless Streak Continues
United have not won back-to-back games since mid-March. Their recent 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season offered some optimism, but the loss to the ASEAN All-Stars highlighted their ongoing inconsistency.
Before their summer break and July pre-season preparations, the Red Devils will play one last friendly—reportedly earning the club £8 million.
Hong Kong Await as Final Opponents
Unlike the ASEAN All-Stars, Hong Kong’s squad consists of players who regularly feature together internationally, presenting a different challenge for United.
Currently ranked 153rd by FIFA, Hong Kong last played in March, drawing 0-0 with Singapore in Asian Cup qualifying—a result that ended their seven-game winning streak.
Managed by former Manchester United academy graduate Ashley Westwood, Hong Kong will face the Red Devils for the first time since 2005, when goals from Giuseppe Rossi and Dong Fangzhuo secured a 2-0 win for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
United will hope for a stronger performance to end their turbulent season on a brighter note.
