The Italian champions Inter Milan take on Hellas Verona at Stadio Bentegodi on Sunday in their final match of the incredible Scudetto-winning season.
Inter easily won their 20th championship and currently sits 19 points ahead of their local rivals AC Milan; nevertheless, Verona can now celebrate having won earlier this week and guaranteed their place in Serie A.
This season, Inter has shown itself to be much too superior for the rest of Italy's elite, easily defeating their closest rivals while only losing twice in the league. However, their 1-1 draw with Lazio last week means they can no longer establish a new club points record.
With a current tally of 93 points, Simone Inzaghi's team still has the opportunity to secure the third spot on Serie A's historical points list (adjusted to three points for a win). A triumph on Sunday evening could propel them beyond Torino's 1948 squad.
Denzel Dumfries recently found the net, contributing to Inter's 87th league goal in their latest match. This achievement marks the fifth consecutive season in which they've reached a century of goals across all competitions. Additionally, they've maintained an impressive defensive record with 21 clean sheets.
Another clean sheet would equal the Serie A record currently shared by their main rivals, Milan and Juventus. Hence, there remains a statistical objective to strive for, despite securing the title back in April during the Derby della Madonnina.
While Inter faced setbacks in failing to defend the Coppa Italia or capitalize on last season's Champions League final appearance, Inzaghi may already have his sights set on a treble for the upcoming season.
However, before contemplating future successes, Inter's immediate focus lies on concluding the season emphatically by extending their dominance over Verona. They've won seven consecutive Serie A matches against Sunday's opponents, including the reverse fixture in January. Moreover, their recent record at Stadio Bentegodi boasts nine victories and three draws from the last 12 encounters.
Verona's track record against Inter over the years has been one of consistent concession, as they have allowed goals in each of their last 25 encounters in the top flight. Their last shutout against the Nerazzurri dates back to February 1992.
Regardless of the outcome this weekend, Hellas has every reason to celebrate, marking the conclusion of an improbable comeback from the brink of relegation. This achievement was sealed with a victory on Monday night, where first-half goals from Tomas Suslov and Michael Folorunsho, the latter recently named in Italy's Euro 2024 provisional squad, secured a 2-1 win over the already relegated Salernitana at Stadio Arechi.
This victory ensured Verona's survival in the top division for the fifth consecutive season. After narrowly avoiding relegation through a playoff last year, they can now approach Serie A's final matchday with a sense of relief.
Under Marco Baroni's guidance, Verona witnessed a remarkable turnaround, particularly evident in their post-winter transfer window form. With 19 points gained after the window closed, they outperformed all other teams in the bottom half of the table, showcasing the impact of their mid-season trading activities.
With Francesco Acerbi back in the lineup for the team's tie with Lazio last week, Inter should have a fully-fit roster for their 2023–24 season finale.
As a result, Simone Inzaghi might give some bench players a chance to start, but captain Lautaro Martinez, who has six Serie A goals against Verona so far, including at least one in his past four league games against them, will be motivated to hold onto his starting position.
In fact, the Capocannoniere favorite, who has an eight-goal advantage over nearest challenger Dusan Vlahovic, has scored 15 goals away from home this season; one more would establish a new club record.
In the meantime, Thomas Henry, a striker with a less impressive track record, remains suspended due to his outspoken protest at the conclusion of Verona's recent loss to Torino. Also, Ondrej Duda, a key player in midfield, will be serving a suspension this weekend.
Juan Cruz continues to be sidelined with a thigh injury, yet Marco Baroni has the option to keep almost the same starting lineup if desired. Michael Folorunsho is expected to shift to a deeper position to compensate for Duda's absence, potentially creating an opening in the attacking third.
One player slated to start alongside the home team's solitary forward, Darko Lazovic, is the sole Serie A midfielder to have both scored at least twice and provided at least two assists since April began.
