Hatayspor, currently going through a rough patch, will be hosting the reigning Turkish Super Lig champions, Galatasaray, at the New Hatay Stadium in the league's 12th round this Saturday.
Having faced defeat in their last three matches, Hatayspor is determined to break Galatasaray's impressive three-month winning streak in the league, as they find themselves perilously close to the bottom four in the Turkish top division. While they are not immediately at risk of relegation, their recent string of losses is concerning.
Their most recent loss was against 19th-placed Samsunspor, who appear to be on the rise under their new manager, Markus Gisdol, with a score of 2-1. This follows defeats against Fenerbahce (4-2) and Kayserispor (2-1), causing them to drop to ninth place after an undefeated streak in the first eight gameweeks. One noticeable issue has been their inability to prevent opponents from scoring, as they conceded eight goals in their recent losing streak, surpassing the seven goals conceded in the initial eight rounds. Hatayspor hopes to regain their form and avoid getting entangled in the relegation battle, currently sitting four points clear of 17th-placed Pendikspor.
On the other hand, Galatasaray is not taking their opponents lightly, especially with Fenerbahce closely trailing them in the standings. Apart from a couple of setbacks in European competitions against Bayern Munich (two defeats) and Copenhagen, Okan Buruk's team has been nearly flawless in the 2023-24 season. Only Kayserispor managed to hold them to a goalless draw in August, which remains their only hiccup in defending their title. They are eager to extend their remarkable 10-game winning streak in domestic league matches.
The away team, who played a flawless defensive game for 79 minutes in Bavaria until Harry Kane broke the tie with seconds remaining, will be hoping for little to no European hangover.
Galatasaray is eager to hold onto their point lead over Fener, who lost to Trabzonspor last weekend. The Yellow Canaries trailed behind the Turkish team.Joelson Fernandes's suspension prevents him from playing against the league leaders after his dismissal against Samsunspor in stoppage time in the second half.
Hatayspor's lone absentee is Fernandes, although Demirel's team will evaluate Faouzi Ghoulam, who was hurt last weekend; if the Algerian is deemed fit, Oguzhan Matur may start his second game.
