Girona’s fight to avoid relegation in La Liga continues on Monday evening as they host Mallorca at Montilivi Stadium for a crucial encounter.

Currently 16th in the La Liga standings, Girona sit just three points above the relegation zone, while Mallorca, in 10th, are chasing European qualification under Jagoba Arrasate’s guidance.

Girona have recorded nine wins, eight draws, and 16 losses in their 33 league matches this season, earning 35 points to hold 16th place, only three points clear of 18th-placed Las Palmas.

After a remarkable 2023-24 season that saw them finish third and secure Champions League football, Girona are struggling in 2024-25, with the White and Reds now at risk of an unexpected relegation.

A loss on Monday could leave Michel’s side in a precarious position with just four league games remaining in the season.

Girona come into the match following a 1-1 draw against Leganes, which halted a four-game losing streak, though they haven’t won in the league since early February.

At home, the White and Reds have earned 21 points from 16 league matches this season, and they face a Mallorca side with 20 points from their 16 away games in 2024-25.

Mallorca, meanwhile, are in contention for a European spot, with 44 points from 33 matches placing them 10th, level with eighth-placed Osasuna.

With five Champions League places, two Europa League spots, and one Conference League position available in La Liga this season, eight Spanish teams are vying for European football next term.

Although Mallorca's recent performance in Spain's top division has been disappointing, they are just two points behind seventh-place Celta Vigo, meaning they can definitely secure a spot in the league stage of the Europa League next season.

In fact, Arrasate's team has only won one of their past five league games, that being on the road against Real Sociedad on April 12. Since then, they have drew with Leganes and fallen short against Barcelona.

Although the Pirates defeated Girona 5-3 in the 2023–24 season, they have won their past two league games against the Catalan team, including a 2-1 victory earlier this season.
