The La Liga top-four contestants Villarreal seek their first win since their recent two losses when they meet Getafe on Sunday afternoon.

Getafe currently holds an 11th position in La Liga standings despite winning their latest two league matches as Villarreal sits fifth place eight points behind fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao with an additional game for bonus points.

Getafe started March by losing 1-0 to Leganes before securing a victory at home against Atletico Madrid 2-1 and followed it up by winning 2-1 against Osasuna away from home.

Getafe currently stand as the eleventh team in La Liga following their nine wins and ten losses and nine draws which amounted to 36 points against 28 matches.

Since last season Deep Blue Ones placed 12th and this campaign they seek to improve their ranking towards the top half positions as they did in 2019-20 by finishing eighth.

The Getafe team scored their 25th goal of the season this campaign yet remains second to last in their division for team goals while defending the pitch effectively 23 times to earn a top defensive ranking behind Atletico Madrid.

The two teams met for three consecutive La Liga matches which resulted in drawn 1-1 games and produced a scoreless 0-0 draw the last time they faced each other during the current season.

The Champions League position has become harder for Villarreal to achieve due to their recent defeats by Alaves and Real Madrid which put them eight points behind fourth-placed Athletic.

Although the Yellow Submarine still have a match against Athletic, which is scheduled on April 6, a victory this weekend and in that crucial match would put Marcelino's team in a great position going into the final straight.

This season, Villarreal has been a great watch. They have scored 49 goals, which is third in the division after Real Madrid and Barcelona, but they have also let up 38 goals, which is a lot given where they are in the standings.

The Yellow Submarine have not lost to their opponents in Spain's top division since January 2019, while Villarreal's most recent away victory against Getafe was a 2-1 triumph in April 2022.
