Only slightly more than two weeks after their league match was postponed due to the passing of Fiorentina director Joe Barone, Fiorentina will play Atalanta BC at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Wednesday night in the first leg of a two-game Coppa Italia semi-final.
The visitors will be trying to make their first final appearance since a 2-1 loss to Juventus in 2021, while the hosts were defeated 2-1 by Inter Milan in last year's Coppa Italia final.
This season, Fiorentina has been incredibly inconsistent under Vincenzo Italiano; they are now seven points behind Wednesday's opponents in sixth position in Serie A, sitting in 10th place.
of all three of Italiano's seasons as the club's manager, they have advanced to at least the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, which has been the one competition in which they have demonstrated some consistency in recent years.
They advanced to the championship game last year but were ultimately defeated by Inter Milan 2-1. This time around, they want to achieve a greater feat by winning their first Coppa Italia since 2000–01.
The hosts enter this game having lost their previous three games without a win. They drew with Maccabi Haifa and Roma before falling to AC Milan 2-1 over the weekend.
Atalanta, in contrast, has won back-to-back games against Sporting, Napoli, and the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 encounter. Prior to these draws, Atalanta had drawn with Juventus and Sporting Lisbon.
The visitors have a poor record in this competition historically; their single win occurred in 1963. They have also lost four times in the final, two of which were in recent seasons.
Two years after Atalanta's 2-0 loss to Lazio in the 2018–19 championship, they suffered another setback, this time at the hands of Juventus.
The manager of both of those losses, Gian Piero Gasperini, will be hopeful that this is the year he finally leads his team to the trophy and wins the club's first major tournament since winning the Coppa Italia 61 years ago.
They have to defeat Fiorentina first, a team they have had mixed success against in the previous campaigns, with five losses and four wins in the previous ten encounters.
