After a tumultuous and upsetting few days, Crystal Palace will play in the Premier League again on Monday night at Goodison Park against Everton.

Two days before to the Eagles' 3-1 defeat at Selhurst Park to London rivals Chelsea, Sean Dyche's team was thrashed 2-0 by Manchester City.Few forwards could easily outmuscle the formidable Jarrad Branthwaite, but Erling Haaland was back to his irrepressible self at the Etihad Stadium, and not even the much sought-after, six-foot-five Everton defender had the answer to halt his advances.

Everton played a brilliant defensive game on the home field of the treble winners, in typical Dyche fashion, and reached the 70-minute mark with their clean sheet intact. However, a fierce goal from Haaland broke the deadlock, and the Norwegian then bullied Branthwaite out of the way to double his afternoon total.

Even though the Toffees' efforts in Manchester were commendable, their inability to pick up any crucial points means that Dyche's team will continue to finish below the dotted line in 18th place in the standings, one point behind Luton Town despite having played one more game. They will also still have to wait to win their first Premier League maximum of the New Year.

Everton is without a top-flight victory in their past seven efforts, after having exploded out of the gates in the previous season with four victories from their first four top-flight matches in December. No Premier League side is having a worse run of consecutive games without a victory than Everton. In addition, the Toffees have reverted to their old offensive ways; in four of their last five Premier League games, they have failed to score; yet, their lone victory in their previous 11 games across all competitions came against the same opponents as Monday's opponents.

Although it was expected that Roy Hodgson's tenure as manager would soon come to an end, his Crystal Palace team has been conceding goals at an alarming rate since he oversaw a 1-0 loss to Everton in January's FA Cup third-round replay. However, after concerning news surfaced in midweek, criticism of his tactics was replaced with empathy.

When Palace announced that the under-fire Hodgson had become ill in training and would not be able to perform his pre-match media duties, some were skeptical. However, the 76-year-old is now stable in the hospital and is still getting a lot of support from people in the football community. His right-hand man Paddy McCarthy is set to seize the captaincy temporarily for Monday's game, as he did during a 4-1 loss at Arsenal last year, amid rumors suggesting that the recovering Hodgson may stand down to make way for Oliver Glasner.

On February 12, Palace faced their second consecutive Monday night matchup with an old flame in Conor Gallagher. The former Eagles loanee scored twice against his old side and did not hesitate to celebrate, putting Hodgson's men in 16th place in the rankings.Over the course of their last four games, Palace's poor defense has allowed 14 goals to be scored. The Eagles have lost all four of them, including their elimination from the knockout stage at Goodison Park last month. Not since September 2014 have the visitors left Everton's field in triumph.
