Rangers' goal on Wednesday night, when they visit Dens Park to play Dundee, is to go up to the top of the Scottish Premiership standings, surpassing rivals Celtic.

In their two encounters with the Dark Blues thus far this season, the Gers have prevailed, most recently in a 3-1 home win in December of last year.

Last Saturday, Dundee's spectacular run of four games without a loss ended as they lost 3-2 at home against Motherwell after blowing a two-goal lead in the first fourteen minutes of play.

Top scorer Luke McCowan doubled the hosts' lead 20 minutes from time after Jordan McGhee headed home the first goal for the Dark Blues. However, Motherwell brilliantly turned the tide of the match in the final minutes, scoring twice in quick succession through Georgie Gent and Theo Blair, then winning with a goal from Moses Ebiye in the 93rd minute.

After letting a comfortable lead slip away, Tony Docherty acknowledged that his Dundee team was "really hurting" after the game. Nevertheless, the Dark Blues are still in the driver's seat to earn their first top-six finish since 2014–15 before the league divides in two the following week.

With one game remaining following a loss to St Johnstone last weekend, Hibernian, who are now in seventh position in the Scottish Premiership, are currently one point behind Dundee in sixth place. For Docherty's team, a win on Wednesday would ensure a spot in the top six, although it will be difficult to overcome championship contenders Rangers.

In fact, Dundee has lost all 11 of their previous encounters with Rangers in all competitions, and their most recent visit to Dens Park in November of last year ended in a crushing 5-0 loss.

All in all, it's safe to say that Sunday's exciting 3-3 draw between fierce rivals Rangers and Celtic proved to be an exciting edition of the Old Firm rivalry, with six goals, a VAR dispute, a stoppage-time equalizer, and a few post-match handbags.

Matt O'Riley Panenka's penalty and Daizen Maeda's 21-second opening put a commanding Celtic team ahead by two goals at the half. The Hoops ought to have been out of sight, but James Tavernier's controversial VAR penalty allowed Rangers to claw their way back into the game.

Rabbi Matondo ended the game with a magnificent curling goal into the top corner in the 93rd minute to give the hosts hope after Abdallah Sima appeared to have earned a point for the Gers in the 86th minute. Adam Idah however restored Celtic's advantage 71 seconds later.

Everything is still the same at the top of the Scottish Premiership with Celtic leading second-place Rangers by one point after all the mayhem and late drama in Glasgow. But Philippe Clement, who called his Gers team the "moral winners" of the Old Firm match, knows that if they win their remaining match against Dundee, they'll go to the top and pass the Hoops by two points.

Rangers have won all eight of their previous meetings with Dundee, with an overall score of 22-2. They have also only lost three of their 14 away top-flight games this season, giving up just five goals in the process, which is the fewest in the division, so Clement and company have good reason to be optimistic about their chances of winning at Dens Park.
