Colombia, one of the pre-tournament favorites, takes on Paraguay in Group D play at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday to kick off their 2024 Copa America campaign.
Los Cafeteros enters this tournament on a 23-game winning streak. They most recently defeated Bolivia 3-0, and the Paraguayans prevailed 1-0 against Panama in their prior meeting.
After going more than two years without losing an international match, the Colombians will be bursting with confidence going into this competition.
The last time they lost to them on the international scene was in February 2022 (1-0), but as of right now, Nestor Lorenzo's team is on an eight-game winning streak and has outscored its opponents in 2024 by a total of 12-3.
Colombia has won six straight games when they have taken the lead and has not lost a single minute of any of their four games this year.
However, they have also performed well while down, winning the last three games after giving up the first goal.
Although not much has gone wrong since Nestor Lorenzo assumed leadership, Colombian fans have witnessed a similar tale in the past when their team notoriously failed in the 1994 World Cup, leaving the competition after the group stage, despite only losing one of their 33 pre-tournament games.
Colombia has won the first game in all three of the previous Copa America tournaments, including a 2-0 victory against the host nation, the USA, in 2016. Last November, they triumphed 1-0 over Paraguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
Prior to this competition, Paraguay had something to build on after winning their last practice match, which was their first triumph of 2024.
They had been winless for four games prior to then, with La Albirroja failing to score in any of those games.
The previous three times they have reached the back of the goal, they have prevailed, not giving up in any of those games.
The Paraguayans were eliminated in the group stage of their 2016 Copa America debut on US territory, failing to win a match and only managing one goal.
Despite his players' apparent preference for deep defense and counterattacking, Daniel Garnero entered the position with an aggressive mindset. In fact, his side had conceded one goal or fewer in nine of their previous ten games.
La Guaranies have not triumphed against Colombia in a Copa America game since 2007 (5-0), and they have lost their past four encounters with them.
