Borussia Dortmund will want to finish the preseason unblemished when they take on a fading Ajax team at the Westfalenstadion on Sunday.
Edin Terzic's team finished a recent US tour with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, while their Dutch counterparts lost 3-1 on July 29 to Augsburg, a Bundesliga opponent of the hosts.
A goal-happy Borussia Dortmund team, which had won five straight friendlies before taking on Chelsea in Chicago on Wednesday, has only been motivated by last season's devastating conclusion to the Bundesliga campaign and the impending departure of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid.
Earlier this summer, BVB defeated Westfalia Rhynern, Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, Rot-Weiss Erfurt, San Diego Loyal, and Manchester United. Terzic's team was headed for a sixth straight victory when Marius Wolf scored the opening goal against Chelsea in the 80th minute. However, the Blues answered through Mason Burstow in the closing seconds.
Terzic should be quite proud of his team's efforts throughout the exhibition period, which comes to an end with Sunday's visit from Ajax, despite Dortmund's failure to get revenge against Chelsea for their Champions League loss last season.
The Black and Yellows resume their competitive responsibilities in the DFB-Pokal on August 12 when they go to DFB-Pokal underdogs Schott Mainz, and their subsequent quest for Bundesliga supremacy begins at home against FC Koln seven days later.
The departure of past stalwarts like Bellingham, Raphael Guerreiro, Mahmoud Dahoud, and Nico Schulz to embark on new endeavors has left Dortmund with the likes of Marcel Sabitzer, Ramy Bensebaini, and Felix Nmecha as its key additions, but Ajax's preseason has not been as happy.
The 36-time Eredivisie winners lost their hold on the Dutch top-flight crown last season, laboring to a third-place finish behind PSV Eindhoven and current champions Feyenoord with 69 points to their record. They are still adjusting to life without Erik ten Hag as their manager.
Ajax's experiment with Alfred Schreuder did not succeed, and even though former defender John Heitinga supervised an initial period of improvement after his hiring, the Amsterdam giants only managed to win four of their final nine Eredivisie matches, resigning themselves to a berth in the Europa League knockout round.
Ajax began their preseason campaign in reasonable manner, drawing 2-2 with Den Bosch before defeating Shakhtar Donetsk by a score of three goals without reply. Now under the tutelage of Maurice Steijn, who last season came agonizingly close to guiding Sparta Rotterdam to a spot on the continent.
After winning 5-3 over SpVgg Unterhaching, Steijn's team has subsequently lost 3-0 to Anderlecht and 3-1 to Augsburg, despite receiving a comparatively favourable opening Eredivisie match at home against Heracles Almelo on August 12.
Ajax have won four of their previous six Champions League encounters with BVB, including a pair of 4-0 and 3-1 victories during the 2021–22 group stage before to their terrible demise. However, the visitors' record versus Dortmund makes for pleasant reading.
