Three days after Massimiliano Allegri's unavoidable dismissal, Juventus takes on Bologna, who are headed to the Champions League, under Thiago Motta to see how strong they are.
The only thing separating the third and fourth-place teams at this late stage of the season is goal difference when they play each other in Monday's Serie A match at Renato Dall'Ara.
The much-coveted Bologna head coach Motta is reportedly in negotiations for a three-year contract with the Bianconeri, despite the fact that his exceptional Rossoblu team has already accomplished the main objective.
Bologna will, in fact, eat at the Champions League table for the first time in their history in the 2024–25 campaign after a 2-0 victory against Napoli, who were displaced as champions, thanks to goals from Dan Ndoye and Stefan Posch early in the game. This guarantee placed the Rossoblu among the best teams in Europe.
Motta's team may finish in fifth place and still qualify for the top continental competition the following year because of Italy's exceptional UEFA coefficient, while third-place Rossoblu still have some work to do to stay on the podium.
In fact, a loss to Juventus will drop Bologna to fourth place, while Atalanta BC, in fifth place, is just four points behind with a game remaining. However, with the championship already secured, the results of Monday's game and their last encounter against Genoa on May 25 will be insignificant.
Bologna has gone eight games without a loss and has prided itself on its defensive cohesion. Under Motta, his team has kept six clean sheets and given up just two goals in their last 720 minutes of football. Only Inter Milan (45), the defending champions, have more home points than Bologna (40).
Just two days after leading a tenacious 1-0 victory over Atalanta BC in this year's Coppa Italia final, furious Allegri was ejected from the Turin headquarters on Friday night, marking his transition from a probable future Juventus manager to a recently fired past one.
Juventus understandably saw fit to fire Allegri due to his "certain behaviours" in midweek, even though his players were ecstatic. Allegri, who was sent off, reportedly lost his cool and threatened to rip off a journalist's ears and hit him in the face, although his legal team refuted these claims.
Youth team coach Paolo Montero is expected to take charge of Juve's final matches against Bologna and Monza, which don't have a lot riding on them because the fourth-placed visitors have qualified for the Champions League next year, while the Bianconeri board is frantically trying to come to an agreement with Motta.
But in addition to his emotional outburst, Allegri departed Juventus after a dismal run of play that saw Juventus winning only two of their final fifteen games—both of which were one-goal victories at home against Frosinone and Fiorentina—and drawing his final five Serie A games as manager.
Juve has lost all seven of the Old Lady's previous away Serie A games, but they have a remarkable 25-game winning run against the Rossoblu after a 1-1 tie with Bologna in August. They have also not lost at Dall'Ara since 1998.
