Barcelona seeks to extend their current impressive streak by hosting league rivals Girona at their home ground Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys during Sunday afternoon.

The Thursday match between Barcelona and Osasuna resulted in Barcelona winning by 3-0 which extended their La Liga lead to three points as they sit atop with Real Madrid at second place and Girona maintains their position in 13th place at 34 points from 28 matches.

Barcelona collected their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions after a 3-0 victory against Osasuna during the Thursday fixture where Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski netted for the Catalan side.

The game between Barcelona and Osasuna has become a matter of investigation after Osasuna questioned whether Inigo Martinez was legally eligible to play. 

During this crucial phase of the season Flick's team must remain focused because they face Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final second round with the tie balanced at 4-4 and a few days away.

It would be shocking if Barcelona received any sort of penalty, though, considering they are reportedly certain that they got Spain's approval to play Martinez.

With just a few weeks left in the season, Girona find themselves 10 points behind sixth-placed Real Betis, making European qualification highly unlikely unless a dramatic turnaround occurs. Meanwhile, they sit just seven points above the relegation zone, adding pressure to their final matches.

Under Michel, the team has gone three games unbeaten, but their form has been inconsistent since mid-January, with just one win across all competitions. Their recent La Liga performances have been particularly concerning, with only one victory in their last nine matches and five defeats in that stretch.

Historically, Girona have faced Barcelona only 10 times, yet they’ve managed two memorable victories—including a league double over their Catalan rivals in the 2023-24 season. However, Barcelona dominated the reverse fixture earlier this term with a 4-1 win and have historically averaged over three goals per game against Girona.
