Copa del Rey champions Athletic Bilbao will carry forward their title defence when the face Osasuna at San Mames in the Copa del Rey match scheduled for Wednesday.

Los Leones narrowly beat Logrones in the previous round, which they needed to take to penalties to ensure they advanced to the last 32 and Los Rojillos needed a narrow 1-0 victory over Tenerife to ensure that the had a place in the final 16 of the Copa del Rey competition.

It will be the first time that Athletic play as holders of the Copa del Rey after they went all the way to get the better of Mallorca on penalties in the final in Seville last season.

Like they emerged winner in a shootout to clinch the trophy, Los Leones started Icons of the defense the same way but they would of been disheartened by the fact that they were to be held to a barren draw for 120 minutes against a fourth tier team of Logrones.

Most importantly, Ernesto Valverde’s side remain confident in a penalty shootout in which they converted four or the five chances they had proved decisive in ensuring that the team has a realistic shot at tasting back-to-back Copa del Rey crowns for the first time in over a half a century.

Athletic played in the third round of the cup tie and then they suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Spanish Super Cup semi-finalist Barcelona of Saudi Arabia.

They can still boast another record, namely, ten-match uneasy record of home games in all the tournaments, and four victories in the subsequent games at the stadium of San Mames.

Athletic will also be able to take confidence from a 2-1 victory away at Osasuna in December when they came from behind to secure the win with goals from Gorka Guruzeta and Alex Berenguer.

Athletic have had considerable success in the competition having won the competition 24 times while Osasuna has not taste momentary victory in the Copa del Rey despite qualifying to the final twice in the 21 st century.

Los Rojillos' devoted fans were left waiting for their first major trophy when they lost to Real Betis in extra time in the 2004–05 final and then gave up a slim lead to lose 2-1 to Real Madrid in the 2022–23 final.

After leading Osasuna through three rounds of competition, starting with a decisive 5-0 victory against Chiclana in November, Vicente Moreno will be hoping to be the one to lead his team to Copa del Rey success.
In their most recent cup match, Osasuna narrowly defeated Tenerife 2-1 after overcoming a significant scare in round two, rallying from a two-goal deficit to defeat third-tier Ceuta 3-2.

In their league matchup with Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Los Rojillos failed to build on that victory and lost by a slim margin of 1-0 at the Metropolitano, dropping them to 11th place and five points outside the top six.

Osasuna is now getting ready for another challenging road game after an unsuccessful trip to the capital. Wednesday's visitors are hoping to win at San Mames for the first time since February 2020.
