On Monday night in Hungary, Albania looks to defeat tiny Liechtenstein in a stress-free friendly match before attempting to create a seismic upset in the Euro 2024 Group of Death.
Later this summer, Sylvinho's team will play in the continent's biggest competition for the second time, but their "visitors" will still play the part of European whipping boys.
But Albania's prize for winning the division is a very tough trio of group matches against the best teams in Europe: 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia, 2008 and 2012 champions Spain, and defending champion Italy are all ready to give Sylvinho's team a rough time at the Euros.
The Red and Blacks haven't had a good start to 2024, as they were predicted to finish last in that difficult group and lost 3-0 to Chile in their first friendly of the year before losing 1-0 to Sweden three days later.
Except for San Marino, Monday's match could be as winnable as they get for Albania. Prior to playing in just their second-ever international event, Sylvinho's team will also play Azerbaijan at Hungary's Haladas Sportkomplexum.
Monday's opponents Liechtenstein, whose most recent continental qualifying campaign was their weakest to date, will be jealous of Albania even if their journey at Euro 2024 ends in another group-stage elimination, as was the case at the 2016 tournament.
The Blue-Reds had advanced to the finals seven times previously, winning at least one point each time. However, this time around, all ten of their games in Group J resulted in losses, an unfortunate honor they shared with San Marino, Cyprus, Malta, and Gibraltar.
Moreover, until March 26, Konrad Funfstuck's team was on a miserable 24-game losing streak in all competitions. Only the scoreless latter scored less goals than Liechtenstein's meager preliminary campaign total.
That terrible run was ended in their most recent game, a 1-1 tie with Latvia, but the last time the Blue-Reds supporters saw their team come out on top was in October 2020 when they defeated Luxembourg 2-1 in a friendly match.
In men's international football, Liechtenstein will suitably face Albania for the fourth time after nearly four years; nevertheless, the Red and Blacks have won the last three encounters, 2-0, including two World Cup qualifying matches.
