Ajax host FC Twente at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Sunday, clinging to slim hopes that the final day of the 2024–25 Eredivisie season might still bring an unexpected twist in their favour.

With the title now out of their control, all De Godenzonen can do is secure three points against the Tukkers and hope that Sparta Rotterdam manage to halt PSV Eindhoven's charge in their parallel fixture.

With just one matchday left, PSV lead Ajax by a single point at the top of the league. A win this weekend will secure their 25th Dutch league title.

A month ago, Ajax seemed destined to clinch the championship, needing only six points from their final five matches to end their title drought since the 2021-22 season. But a crushing 4-0 loss to Utrecht on April 20 sparked a shocking collapse, with Ajax earning just two points from their last four games, throwing the title race wide open.

Meanwhile, PSV capitalized with four straight victories, including a 4-0 thrashing of Heracles midweek, reclaiming first place as Ajax faltered against Groningen. The Boeren are now one win away from defending their title, boasting a six-game winning streak and just one loss in their last nine matches since early March.

Sparta Rotterdam, the hosts, have also turned their season around. After struggling in the relegation zone for much of the first half, De Kasteelheren surged post-February break with an impressive seven-game unbeaten run, including four wins and three draws, lifting them to mid-table.

PSV, however, have been relentless, netting at least two goals in nine of their last 10 league matches and three in each of their last four away games, setting the stage for a thrilling title-deciding clash.

Should PSV clinch the title this weekend, it would cement one of the most shocking late-season collapses in Eredivisie history—especially for an Ajax side that appeared to have the trophy within reach just weeks ago.

Needing only six points from their final five matches, Ajax were in prime position to reclaim the Dutch crown. But a humiliating 4-0 loss to Utrecht triggered a dramatic slide, with the Amsterdam giants collecting just two points from their last four outings.

The latest blow came midweek in Groningen, where Ajax twice took the lead—first through Anton Gaaei and then Wout Weghorst—but were denied victory in stoppage time by 10-man Groningen’s Thijmen Blokzijl, who struck a late equaliser to stun Francesco Farioli's side.

That draw opened the door for PSV, who capitalised emphatically with a 4-0 rout of Heracles, leapfrogging Ajax to take the top spot heading into the final round.

Despite the grim atmosphere likely to hang over the Johan Cruijff ArenA this weekend, head coach Farioli struck a defiant tone ahead of the clash, reminding everyone that “anything can happen in football.”

As for Twente, this fixture holds little competitive value. While they’re just three points ahead of Go Ahead Eagles, their superior head-to-head record guarantees they’ll finish above them even with a loss.

Twente started the calendar year in fine form but have since stumbled, picking up only six wins in 16 matches during 2025, along with five draws and five defeats—form that has seen them fall out of European qualification contention.

Last weekend, Joseph Oosting’s side surrendered a 2-1 lead at home to AZ Alkmaar, eventually losing 3-2 in what was their fourth loss in the last eight league matches. Away from home, their struggles have been even more pronounced—managing just one win in their last nine Eredivisie road games since early December.

While the visitors would certainly relish the chance to spoil Ajax’s finale, their poor away form suggests it won’t come easy.
