Sunday night's Eredivisie gameweek eight penultimate encounter will take place at Amsterdam's Johan Cruijff Arena, where Ajax will host Groningen.

The visitors are in ninth place in the league standings with nine points from seven games, while the hosts have just played five games this season and have achieved 10 points, good for fifth place.

Ajax started the 2023–24 season well and will be aiming to go four games without a loss in the top flight this weekend after concluding the previous one with a late push up the table.

In their opening five matches of the season, de Godenzonen have secured three victories, one draw, and a defeat to NAC, followed by a 1-1 draw against Slavia Prague in the Europa League midweek.

Due to a police strike in the Netherlands, Ajax have only hosted two home league games this season, winning both. They have now gone three consecutive games across all competitions at the Johan Cruijff Arena without conceding a goal.

During this three-game stretch, Francesco Farioli's squad has netted an impressive 12 goals, including a dominant 4-0 win over Turkish side Besiktas in their most recent home match.

The hosts are strong favorites this week, especially after their 3-2 victory over Groningen in their last encounter, which extended their winning streak against this team to five consecutive matches since March 2021.

In the meantime, Eredivisie rookies Groningen had a fantastic opening to life in the top division, winning their opening two games of the campaign 4-1 against NAC Breda and 2-1 against RKC Waalwijk.

They haven't been able to maintain that record, though, and now they want to win this league game to avoid going without a win for the sixth time in a row after three straight draws and two losses.

In their most recent game, Trots van het Noorden lost 1-0 against the gradually improving Go Ahead Eagles, with Oliver Valaker Edvardsen scoring the game's lone goal in the 75th minute.

Dick Lukkien's team has a mixed record this season when playing away from home, having only won once, drawn once, and lost once, although scoring goals in all three of those games.

Up to nine players are expected to be sidelined this weekend due to injuries that Francesco Farioli is now dealing with. Gaston Avila, a long-term absence who had knee surgery during the offseason, is the first of these players.

Jordan Henderson will miss some time due to a groin strain that he sustained against RKC Waalwijk. The likes of Kian Fitz-Jim (knock), Steven Berghuis (knee), Julian Rijkhoff (knee), and Wout Weghorst (hamstring) will join him; however, none of them are anticipated to play again until next month.

This weekend, Groningen will also be short-handed as Marvin Peersman and Brynjolfur Willumsson are both suspended indefinitely after being sent off in the defeat to Heerenveen.

Midfielder Tika de Jonge and defender Marco Rente are listed as probable injury absentees due to knocks, but they haven't been ruled out of the trip to Amsterdam just yet.
