Wednesday night's matchup between Aberdeen and Motherwell, two Scottish Premiership teams in the bottom half of the standings, takes place at Pittodrie.
These two clubs are separated in the top flight rankings by just one goal; the Steelmen, in eighth place, are just a hair ahead of the Dons, in ninth.Last weekend, Aberdeen defeated Bonnyrigg Rose 2-0 in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, marking Neil Warnock's first victory as manager at Pittodrie, four days after his team lost 2-1 to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.
Star striker Bojan Miovski, who has scored seven goals in as many games since the start of the year, helped the Dons defeat their League Two rivals and set up a quarterfinal matchup at home against Kilmarnock next month with a brace in the first half.
Although Warnock, 75, acknowledged that he "wasn't overly enamoured" with his team's performance, he was still happy that his team advanced to the next round and expressed optimism that improvements would be made in their most recent matchup with Motherwell, a team that the Dons have liked playing against recently.
After losing all five of their prior games, Aberdeen has actually triumphed in their past three meetings with the Steelmen, scoring eight goals in the process.
Aberdeen will be happy to play again at Pittodrie, where they have only lost once in the previous seven games. They will also be confident in their ability to defeat Motherwell, who have lost their past ten away games. The Steelmen's most recent away loss was last Friday in the Scottish Cup fifth round, when they lost 2-1 to second-tier team Greenock Morton. This was just three days after they crushed Ross County 5-0 in the Premiership.
Harry Paton's own goal had put Motherwell down at the interval, and George Oakley's goal increased Morton's lead ten minutes later. Five minutes from time, Steelmen replacement Jack Vale pulled one back to set up a nerve-wracking finale, but the hosts held on to humiliate their elite rivals.
After the defeat, Stuart Kettlewell expressed his dissatisfaction at the loss of the Steelmen's six-game winning streak. He wants his squad to put in their best effort in preparation for their upcoming encounter in an attempt to salvage three crucial Premiership points and move out of the relegation zone.
Despite losing 3-1 on their most recent visit to Pittodrie in February of last year, Motherwell may enter the game on Wednesday feeling optimistic since they have won two of their past three away games against Aberdeen.
